Your Personal Safety On Nevis

Nevis is relatively crime free, but it's still important, wherever you go in the world, to exercise normal precautions and use good common sense.  For example, don't leave your valuables unattended in rental cars, or on the beach (it's best to just leave anything very valuable locked in your hotel room or the safe in your room).

The people of Nevis are warm and friendly, and always helpful to visitors, and the odds that anyone would accost a woman out alone at night are exceedingly slim,  but it's just never a good idea for a woman to be out alone at night period.

When shopping, it's a good idea to use a secure-strap fanny pack (like the Stashsafe from Magellan's) instead of a typical handbag (remember - always keep the pack in the front, clip in back) - it relieves you from shoulder strain, keeps your hands free, and when you find something you must have, you won't have to fumble for your wallet or coin purse.  And never, ever flash around large bills.  Not only might it attract someone who would like to relieve you of that money, but it makes haggling with shopkeepers more difficult - they are less likely to come down on price when they know you have plenty of cash.  Take small bills or small-denomination traveler's cheques (or a cheque card) or just a single credit card or two.   Leave the rest locked up in your hotel room safe.  And be sure you have a list of your credit cards with the company contact toll-free numbers in your safe too - just in case - that way you can quickly cancel any credit cards that get stolen.
