Nevis First Film Festival

It finally arrived and the week was a success! Nevis’ first International Feature Film Festival, or NIF3, was launched at Coconut Grove Restaurant last Sunday, May 3 and went on through today, May 8, 2009.

What is so great about this festival you might ask! Well, it promotes the Nevis tourism product and adds diverse activities. Any island that tourists frequent would appreciate this, as it adds more culture and ethnic backgraound.

What kind of movies were enjoyed? Nevis dwellers and visitors could view feature-length and short-films, animation, drama, documentary, experimental and hybrid new works by filmmakers from around the world. These were films from Belize, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Costa Rica among others.

Sknvibes got some good quotes from the Premier of Nevis Joseph Parry, who informed a packed audience:

We have been the first in so many things. We had the first hotel in the Caribbean, with the Bath Hotel. Visitors as far as Europe came to Nevis to experience the springs at the Bath Hotel.

“Nevis also has had the first golf course outside of Scotland and the island will soon be the first green island in the Caribbean with Geothermal. Although we will not be the first island outside of Europe to have a film Festival, we promise to be the best over the years.

I am very pleased with the subjects of the movies. Immediately I thought of the young people who would be able to see the films with mind bending, informative and intellectual film topics. I am hoping that many people will be exposed to this new festival on Nevis.

If in Nevis, check out all the fun Nevis Island Activities offered to ALL ;) There are beautiful Nevis Hotels, Nevis Resorts and Nevis Villas where you and your friends or family can enjoy your stay in Nevis West Indies.

No Swine Flu In Nevis

The Office of the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis is proud to announce that there is no worries of Swine Flu on Nevis Island or its sister island of St. Kitts.

The island inhabitants have known of the outbreak of the Swine Flu in Mexico and the USA. They are monitoring it closely and taking safety precautions.

To read more about the Swine Flu itself, roles of the public and good news about preventing it, see the helpful website of the Office of the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Martin warns the federation, but assures there is no need to worry.

Surveillance has also been stepped up in community health centres, emergency rooms and private doctor offices. The Ministry of Health is in constant contact with PAHO, which has a Rapid Response Team mobilised as well as stockpiles of supplies. Local medication needs have been calculated based on a worst case scenario assessment and communicated to PAHO.

He also informed about the safety precautions being executed:

The captain of an aircraft or seacraft is required by international treaty to declare what is happening onboard. There is a health declaration that is submitted to the board of control people. As people are disembarking, the Port Health Officers will scan for persons who appear to be sick.

If there is a sick intercept, that person would be issued with a mask and sequestered. The Port Officer will conduct an initial assessment and will get in contact with his medical backup. If the person needs to be put in the hospital, they are taken to the hospital.

All persons coming to St. Kitts-Nevis right now are receiving information. If you develop certain systems, this is what you do, this is who you call. Information is being sent today to hotels and guesthouses, in the event of [a guest becoming ill] this is what you do.

You can read more about safety precautions from SKvibes. Read more about the Swine Flu itself, HERE. 180px-pd_diagram_of_swine_flu_symptoms_ensvg.png

Beautiful Nevis remains unaffected by the Flu epidemic. Hopefully it will remain that way.
