Flora At Its Finest

What: Botanical Garden of Nevis
Where: Montpelier Estate - Charlestown, Nevis West Indies
When to Visit: Monday through Friday: 9am - 5pm

The Beginning: A Philadelphia businessman, Joseph Murphy, decided to build a botanical garden a few years ago on beautiful Nevis Island. His goal was to create the finest in the Caribbean; he did just that.

This delightful garden is located on a hill with beautiful vistas of the entire Island of Nevis. It was originally slotted to be the site for his house; luckily, he had a change of heart. :)

The Botanical Garden is divided into several sections for orchids, cactus, palms, bamboo, fruit trees and hundreds of other varieties. A fantastic replica of a West Indian house serves as the garden’s center where you can find a gift shop and tearoom restaurant.

This Rainforest Conservatory offers an exciting adventure. It provides a variety of colorful flora as you discover them one by one through ruins of a lost temple. Sacred sculptures and waterfalls provide the perfect aumbiance for such an exploration.

Nevis Peak, West Indies

The Beautiful MT. NEVIS

Even though it is a volcano, it has been considered completely harmless throughout history.

No historical documentation on eruptions are known from Mt. Nevis, and the youngest dated eruption is thought to be about 100,000 years ago.

Nevis Peak, West Indies

The Location is 17.2N, 62.6W and Summit Elevation reaches 985 m. This is Space Shuttle photo STS067-0705A-0082 looking southwest across the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. Photo taken March 16, 1995. nevis2.jpg

Nevis Peak is a Holocene stratovolcano with no historic eruptions. Holocene refers to the time period from 10,000 years ago to the present as well as refering to the rocks and deposits of that age. Look up more terms like this in the Volcanic and Geologic Glossary.

The conical island of Nevis, lying across a narrow channel from St. Kitts (St. Christopher) Island, is a composite cone with overlapping summit craters. An unnamed lava dome is located NE of the rims of the two craters. Nevis Peak, the 985 m high point of the island, is located on the outer crater rim. The inner crater truncates the western rim of the earlier crater and is widely breached on the west side. A small lava dome was emplaced within the inner crater in recent pre-Columbian time, and pyroclastic flows and mudflows were deposited on the lower slopes of the cone. Four lava domes were constructed on the flanks of the volcano. Madden’s Mount and Butlers Mountain were built on the NE and eastern flanks, respectively; Mount Lily lies on the NW coast and Saddle mountain on the southern coast.

No historical eruptions are known from Nevis, and the youngest dated eruption was about 100,000 years ago. Active fumaroles and hot springs are found on the island (the most recent of these formed in 1953 and remains active), and seismic swarms have occurred on several occasions during the 20th century.

The HOT SPRINGS! This was a huge perk of Nevis Island and still is! In the early 1600’s, Europen travelers and local residents began “taking the cure” by bathing in mineral springs. Nevis Island visitors are still appreciating the history of The Bath Hotel in Nevis.

For being the first hotel in the Caribbean, the original building portrays the beautiful history of Nevis.

Sunrise Tours on Nevis Island offers a guided hike up the NEVIS PEAK. On this strenuous hike, you will take delight in getting aquainted with the many plants and animal species natural to these particular elevations and conditions. The view is breathtaking and the accomplishment of making to the top is Priceless.

For those who endure to the end reaching the top of the Peak, a certificate of achievement awaits them at the bottom. I am quite proud of myself for completing this ejoyable Nevis Island Adventure

This Wonderful company will guide you on your BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY to the TOP OF NEVIS ISLAND!

The Peak is the most prominent feature of the island. It’s covered with fascinating plants and animals. A rain forest covers 40% of it and characteristics change remarkably from one area on the mountain to the next. Our hikes to the top are strenuous and challenging, but incredibly rich and rewarding. Many plants such as Giant Leaf Philodendrons, Bromilliads and Tree Ferns thrive naturally in the clouds that can’t easily grow much lower down as they need extra water and don’t tolerate bright sun There are gorgeous views on a clear day, but be warned: clear days aren’t that common!
