Obama Coming To Caribbean
Let it be known that the newly elected president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, is expected to attend the upcoming Fifth Summit of the Americas to be held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
This will take place April 17-19, 2009. That’s exactly one month from today. It will be a historical event. Even though it’s not in Nevis, it’s still a huge deal to islanders.
The summit theme: “Securing our citizen’s future by promoting human prosperity, energy security and environmental sustainability.”
The St. Kitts and Nevis Organization of the American States (OAS) representative, Starret Greene, said:
I’m pleased to … to confirm that the 44th president of the United States, President Barack Obama, will be attending the fifth summit of the Americas in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago….I want to also say that President Barack Obama will be among the 34 heads of state of government who will gather to discuss a number of issues relevant to the peoples of the Americas.
St. Kitts and Nevis political leader, Dr. Denzil Douglas, is scheduled to be in attendance at the summit.
Commenting on the significance of President Obama’s visit to the region, Greene stated that whenever the president of the United States goes anywhere, given that he is perceived by many to be the most powerful man on earth, it is always of significance. That is true! Usually, everyone knows where he is at all times.
The national OAS representative said in terms of exposing our region to the rest of the world, it is going to be a big boost. Speaking of another reason for President Obama’s presence in the region, Greene highlighted that:
Our heads of states of government in the Caribbean region do have some very critical issues that they want to raise with him …. I believe that the organisers will arrange for either one and one meetings with President Barack Obama or a meeting or two where he meets with Caribbean heads of states of government and there they will have the opportunity to tell him on frank and honest terms about the issues that they are concerned about and how they will wish for him as president to bring to bear his enormous influence and power, his power to help to find solutions.
The St. Kitts and Nevis OAS rep concurs that “it will be a wonderful occasion to strengthen our relations with the United States, that is, Caribbean United States relation.”
We will update on the event when it happens. Until then, Nevis will be enjoying wonderful weather!
