Nevis Education Prospers
“Reading! The foundation to a good education; the key to a rewarding future.”
Education is always a primary focus on Nevis Island. A first anniversary has recently and proudly been marked for the new St. John’s Primary School at the Flats, Cole Hill.
There was a Fun Book Party last week and they continue the celebrating many days after. Celebration is under the theme “Reading! The foundation to a good education; the key to a rewarding future.”
SKNVibes reported that the school principal, Adina Taylor, said:
“A parent really brought forth the idea of having a book party and we thought it was a good idea,” Taylor said. “We decided to go with it and we invited persons from the Nevis Public Library Services, from other school libraries, and from the Teacher Resource Centre (of the Department of Education) and asked them to set up exhibitions.”
“The children are very excited about the Book Party. If you look around you will see how the children are excited and they are going from station to station and they are reading. The whole idea is to get children reading, not only today, but kind of motivate them to read and continue to read.”
“We had asked the general public to come in and give us donations of books or monetary contributions. We got very good response from Bargain House, and we have some parents and other persons who donated books. The Nevis Co-operative Credit Union sent us a donation and we have received commitment from other persons as well.”
The Charlestown Public Library, the Charlestown Primary School Library, the Teacher Resource Centre and the Disaster Management Department set up mini exhibitions that attracted the children in a way that even baffled their teachers.
Prominent members of the public were also invited to do selected reading to the students in their respective classes. So whio got to read to the children? Hyleta Liburd, retired principal education officer; Londy Esdaille, accounts and finance manager with the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union; and Sonita Daniel, the director of Nevis Public Library Services were just a few.
The school has big things going on. It has 114 students. It held an intensely contested spelling bee completion on Monday, which was won by the Gold House, while on Tuesday they held an art, poetry and creative writing competition. By Wednesday, the winners had not been named, but the principal promised that once announced, they would receive attractive prizes.
It is always pleasing to hear that the children of Nevis Island are getting a rich education. It is vital for their healthy growth and development.
If you are planning a Nevis Vacation in the near future, take note on how important the Nevis Education is for the Nevis Youth.
