Cruise Ship Season Sets Sail

The first of an estimated 438,000 cruise ship passengers for the 2008-2009 tourism season will arrive on St. Kitts’ shores today and stakeholders are being urged by the St. Kitts Nevis Hotel and Tourism Authority (HTA) to make the most of all opportunities.

Nevis is well prepared for all Nevis Island Visitors, as Tourism Awareness Month was recently noticed…

‘Tourism - The time is now, the opportunity is yours’, as this season will see the largest number of passengers ever coming to the Federation, a 4.3% increase over the roughly 420,000 of the 2007/2008 season.

Manager of the HTA, Michael Head, said that the arrival of the 850-passenger Marco Polo this week should be another reminder for all businesses connected to tourism to “make sure your property is in prime condition now so you can get out there and market it”.

“Because of the state of things right now I do not think it will be a brilliant season, but it should be ok if people take the right actions,” he said.

“We would advise businesses not to reduce the amount of money they are putting in their marketing campaigns, but rather increase them because they are competing for a smaller market share.” You can read more on this article HERE!

FYI - Nevis was not harmed by Hurricane Omar. SKNVIBES also gives some good insight to a post hurricane update:

For most of the island, adverse effects on private property, government and tourism establishments are limited to minor landscaping and small flying debris issues. There are no reports of injuries or fatalities. All residents and visitors are accounted for and efforts to keep everyone safe and out of harm’s way appear to have been successful.

Power and phone service has been restored to the island and the Vance W. Amory Airport has re-opened for commercial flights. However, all visitors were urged to contact their airline carrier and preferred hotel to confirm their flights and accommodations.

Uncharacteristically, Hurricane Omar approached Nevis from the west, which resulted in impact to the Leeward side of the island including the capital city of Charlestown and Gallows Bay, the businesses, tourism establishments and residential areas along Pinney’s Beach, Tamarind Bay, Oualie Bay and the Main Highway running north toward the airport.

While the wind and rain from this storm reached category two on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the majority of damage resulted from the storm surge and some damage has been reported to the beaches and businesses along the western coast of the island. There are reports of two commercial vessels running aground, but no serious damage to the ships or the marine life eco-system.

Some damage has been reported at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis. The Resort management is assessing the damage to the property and will provide an update Friday at midday. The Resort is currently closed with a tentative re-opening date of November 1.
