I have a NATURAL BEAUTY and I AM PRECIOUSLY PRESERVED by my keepers! I consist of approximately 12,000 inhabitants…mostly of African descent. English is my official language and my literacy rate of 98 %, is one of the highest in the Western Hemisphere.

I reside in the Caribbean Leeward Islands. My sister is the Island of Saint Kitts. Together we constitute The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and together we are a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Although some claim Charlestown to be my capital, because I am technically part of The Federation Of Saint Kitts and Nevis, my official capital is Basseterre, St. Kitts.

I am BEAUTIFUL and conical in shape, with a volcanic peak at my center called Mt. Nevis. I can be described as having fringed, long strands of golden sand beaches. I am surrounded by reefs causing my surroundings to be calm and relaxed. My lush interior is fresh, tropical, healthy and vibrant.

I was named Oualie ~ “Land of Beautiful Waters” by the Caribs and Dulcina “Sweet Island” by the early British settlers. My name, NEVIS derived from Spanish, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves “Our Lady of the Snows”, a name given to me in 1493 by Christopher Columbus who thought the clouds over my peak resembled a snow-capped mountain.
