SKNVibes.com gives some great Olympic news…
The decision to open the largest sporting event in the world on 08.08.08 at 8 p.m. was no accident for the Chinese, as the number eight symbolizes confidence and prosperity in their culture.
The 129 day and roughly 85,000 mile journey of the Olympic torch however, has brought everything but praise for the Chinese government on the world stage. Many countries have protested this particular Olympics because of China’s human rights record, the right to independence of sovereign states under the government’s control and China’s support of various totalitarian regimes.
Much higher than the Nevis Peak, the Olympic torch reached its highest height in history on May 6, 2008 as it was carried to the peak of Mt. Everest (17,060 ft) by three Tibetan and two Han Chinese sherpas! That makes Nevis Peak seem like an ant hill! haha ![]()
No athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis has won an Olympic medal, but sprinter Kim Collins has gone the closest for the Caribbean nation. Twice a finalist in the 100 meters, he finished seventh in Sydney in 2000 and sixth in Athens in 2004.
For viewers in the Federation, the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics will be televised on NBC Friday, August 8 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight when, amongst thousands of participants, the four from team St. Kitts-Nevis will proudly hold the federation’s flag high for the world to see!
