Sporting Facilities Funds Come Through
This could be just the ticket the Nevis Youth has been looking for!
I think it will brighten many lives and serve the Nevis community in a very positive light.
Nevis Island keeps on Amazing Me
Prime Minister and Minister of Sport, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas was very grateful when he accepted two checks totalling nearly US$400,000 for the development of the Nevis Sporting Facilities in Challengers and Half Way Tree from the Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, Rong-chuan Wu.
These funds total US$284,000 for the Half Way Tree and US$115,000 for the Challengers. What a generous gift huh!?
Dr. Douglas was a former sports administrator. He knows much about the development and opportunities these facilities will bring. He expresses his thoughts about the potential.
“All over the world and the Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis, our young people are being challenged. We hear very often of the ills that they may be associated with. We hear very often that they are restless, that they are involved in serious crimes, that maybe enough is not said about them in terms of their true potential that needs to be developed and harnessed in the betterment of their country.”
Young people can use this as “the opportunity to build their sporting skills so that they can use their past time in a very worthwhile way.”
He repeated a comment made at last Saturday’s official opening of Football House, that there is money to be made from sports.
“Our young people need to harness their skills, especially in the sports that we have for many, many years excelled. We need to ensure that our young people in Half Way Tree and Challengers continue to develop their sporting skills in football, cricket and basketball.”
Dr. Douglas was of the view that the Labour Party’s prospective candidate for Constituency Four, Mr. Glenn “Ghost’ Phillip, who hails from Challengers and is a highly respected basketballer and administrator over the years, “will be able to use the facilities that we are building in Challengers and Half Way Tree to bring the young people together and show them not only what skills he has learnt over the years, but be a true role model to the young people of Challengers and Half Way Tree as he would be to the young people in the entire Constituency Six generally.”
