The Independence of Nevis
Almost every nation celebrates their Independence. Well so does Good Ole’ Nevis!
Their Country Motto is “Country Above Self”
As North Americans enjoyed watching the patriotic fireworks of their nations freedom yesterday on the Fourth of July, Nevis-Queen of the Caribees celebrates their liberation from Britain annually as well. Nevis’ colrful Independence Day happens every September 19th.
Saint Kitts and Nevis attained independence from Britain in 1983 and the event is celebrated with a Military Parade at Grove Park. But the less formal way the islanders celebrate is at the monthly race meeting at the Indian Castle Race Track, beside the Atlantic Ocean in the remote south-east corner of the island. Horse racing has a long history in St Kitts and Nevis, but the track was not opened until 1998. Thoroughbreds from all over the Caribbean compete at this picturesque course. Betting is by the parimutuel (tote) system. There is racing throughout the afternoon, but there’s a great deal going on besides including live music and excellent barbecued food.
