Nevisian Cuisine
Caribbean cuisines vary from island to island, but some of the BEST recipes come from the wonderful Island of Nevis, West Indies.
With its rich soil, Nevis and St. Kitts grow a wide variety of fresh produce of fruits and vegetables. The style of cooking is fairly simple, flavored much like other WEST INDIAN CUISINE which I find incredibly delightful.
Nevis recipes are very attractive, easy to prepare and most food preparations are not elaborate which includes a large variety of seafood. It’s a great delight to sample the various island cuisines prepared by the various Nevis Restaurants and Bars.
A few favorites here are marinated shrimps blackened cakes, fresh grilled lobsters, fish, chicken and ribs.

Abundant seafood and meats such as goat add to the diet here in NEVIS. At first I was uncertain about eating goat, but my first time sipping goat water stew was a delight.
It is perhaps the country’s most well-known dish. This is a delicious combination of the main ingredient goat, breadfruit, green pawpaw (papaya), and dumplings (also known as “droppers”) in a tomato-based stew. Yummy. I made sure to get this recipe!
Similar to tamales, another favorite island dish is cook-up, or pelau. This is a mouth watering concoction of chicken, pig tail, saltfish and vegetables with rice and pigeon peas. Instead of having filling rolled inside the dough like tamales, the cornmeal is mixed together with grated sweet potato, pumpkin, coconut, and a few other ingredients; after wrapping the dough in banana leaves, they’re boiled rather than steamed.
Other National specialties also include:
-
• Roast suckling pig
• Spiny lobster
• Crab back
• Curries
• Roti, thin pastry filled with curried potatoes, chickpeas and beef, chicken, goat, shrimp or vegetables
• Pelau, rice, pigeon peas and meat, similar to paella
• Conch (curried, soused or in salad)
• Turtle stews
• Goat’s water (mutton stew)
• Christophine, yams, breadfruit and papaya are also served
Sweets tend to be simply made, sometimes with nothing more than fruit, like tamarind or guava, and sugar. Wikipedia helped me out in finding out a bit more in depth about Nevisian Cuisine.
Most of the Caribbean is known for enjoying it’s share of rum. It is the favorite potion in these islands as well. Most of Nevis’ popular adult beverages are made with tasty flavors of rum with juices and mixes.
The Brinley Gold Company manufactures rum on St. Kitts, with such distinctive flavors as coffee, mango, and vanilla. But the national drink is actually Cane Spirits Rothschild (often abbreviated to CSR), distilled from fresh sugar cane. Belmont Estate and St. Kitts Rum also make rum on the island. In addition several of the beach bars will provide moonshine rum produced by individuals with homemade stills.
Varieties of West Indian Cuisine can be enjoyed all over NEVIS.
There are all kinds of beautiful and relaxed Restaurants and Bars along the Nevis Beaches and in the pampering Nevis Hotels and Nevis Resorts.
There are entertaining beach cook-outs all the time to enjoy food and drinks with your island companion along with Nevis natives.
