Gotta try Goju in Nevis
GOJU…This fun form of Karate is a rewarding activity and a wholesome source of entertainment!
Karate
Nevisians have long had an interest in martial arts. For many years the only cinema showed mainly Kung Fu movies - Karate Kid and Bruce Lee films – but then in the 1990s a professional trainer, Nevis-born Vincent Maynard, returned from the United States and set up a Goju Karate dojo on Nevis. The group started small but has gained popularity over the years. Participants range from young children to mature adults, including tourists sometimes. Visiting instructors also come to demonstrate other techniques. On an island like Nevis, Karate is used for exercise as opposed to self-defence, but in September 2007, Hermitage Plantation Inn and Oualie Beach Resort are staging the first International Martial Arts Tournament (27-30 September) which will hopefully become an annual event. I have not yet had the opportunity to try out Goju for myself! Now that I know all about it, and most importantly, that it is offered in Nevis… it is a top priority on my “Nevis Must Do List”.
I have been inquiring about the sport and found a girl who visited Nevis a short time ago… she writes about Doju…
I was introduced to the Nevis Dojo for USA Goju and subsequently left Nevis with a desire for continuing the practice. Classes run 4 times a week Mon - Thursday alternating in Bath and Gingerland. Run by Sensei Vincent Maynard who is a Nevisian who has lived in the US previously.
Directions: The Bath Community Centre and the Church in Gingerland just down the road from the Sports Bar.
Good night Nevis! Becca Briley
