Nevis Was Properly Prepared For Hurricane Dean…
The “Queen of the Caribbees” Was Well Aware of and Prepared for the Storm
On August 16, Channel 8 Newscast on Nevis properly reported and issued the hurricane warning for the island. The Nevis Disaster Committee met to address the island’s readiness for possible impact as Mr. Lester Blacket reported the oncoming Hurricane Dean and advised Nevis residents to take the appropriate safety precautions.
Nevis Weather is well watched over during hurricane season and Nevis natives were well aware of and prepared for Dean’s predicted and designated path through the Atlantic. The expected track was carefully noted and watched over as the hurricane progressed through the Caribbean and into Mexico.
It is reassuring to see that even this small and precious of an island takes the same safety measures through appropriate and beneficial communication as any huge state or nation.
How did Nevis take cover? Due to the oncoming and ever so powerful Hurricane Dean, ferry services from St. Kitts and Nevis were haulted last Friday as operators moved their boats to safety.
Some flights were delayed at Vance .W. Amory International Airport in Nevis due to Dean’s presense. The Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport in St. Kitts on the other hand reported that flights were on schedule.
AZ Central News said Hurricane Dean made landfall overnight at around 3:30am CDT on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula at Costa Maya, which is about 40 miles ENE of Chetumal Mexico. As it made landfall, Dean was a strong category five hurricane with winds up to 165 mph.
Hurricane Dean has weakened significantly while moving over land, and is now a category one hurricane with sustained winds of up to 8 mph. Dean continues moving west at 19 mph and is currently 60 miles WSW of Campeche Mexico.
Even though Dean has weakened significantly, it is still a hurricane with strong winds and heavy rains. There are many hurricane warnings and tropical storm warnings for parts of Mexico, especially along the Gulf coast of Mexico. To get more specific information on any watches and warnings, as well as the latest on Hurricane Dean, go to the National Hurricane Center website at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Now that Dean is subsiding and the sea has calmed in the Caribbean and the islands are again at peace… Nevis natives have regrouped and continue to focus on more important island matters…
Apparently Nevis travel is not much affected by hurricane season!
This year is only looking better for the Four Seasons Resort as it is busier than last. The resort manager reported that the occupancy of the hotel is at 65% this year compared to the 53% in 2006.
Until tomorrow… this is Becca Briley, signing off
Good night Nevis Lovers
