Hurricane Dean… Destruction in the Caribees!

The Caribbean is witnessing the first major hurricane of the season.

Hurricane Dean showed its face in the eastern Caribbean last Friday and has waisted no time in shattering homes, dumping its rain and unleashing its wrath on the Atlantic. Caribbean Hurricanes can be severely destructive and devistating for any land masses in their paths.

Currently at a Category 4, Dean is building speed and strength as it continues to move northwest through the Yucatan Peninsula and making its way toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Nevis was issued a tropical storm warning last Friday by the National Hurricane Center along with neighboring islands such as the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Grenada, St. Eustatius, Montserrat, Antigua, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Barbados, Saba, Barbuda, St. Maarten and Anguilla.

Even though Nevis did not get hit hard… the rainfall and gusty winds called for fun indoors. When does the National Hurricane Center issue a Tropical Storm Warning? Tropical storm conditions include winds of at least 39 mph which are expected within 24 hours. During a tropical storm, sustained winds reach 39 to 74 mph (34 to 63 knots). Some wind gusts may reach hurricane velocity of 74 mph.

At a category 4, at the current time, Dean is nearing Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and is expected to hit it’s shores by Tuesday evening. Residents have been issued a hurricane warning and to evacuate or take cover. NHC predicts that Hurricane Dean will weaken and lessen to a Category 2 as it returns back to the warm Gulf waters by Wednesday night.
